The Rise of Modular and Prefabricated Buildings in California: Speed Meets Quality

California is seeing a big change in how buildings are made. More and more, builders are turning to modular and prefabricated construction. These methods are faster, cleaner, and often better than traditional ways of building.

So, what does “modular” or “prefabricated” mean? Instead of building everything at the construction site, parts of the building—like walls and floors—are made in a factory. These parts are then brought to the site and put together, like giant building blocks.

One of the biggest benefits is speed. Because the parts are made in a factory, construction can move much faster—sometimes cutting the time in half. This is very helpful in California, where building projects can face delays from bad weather, long permit waits, or not enough workers.

Even though the buildings go up quickly, that doesn’t mean they’re low quality. In fact, factory-made parts are often more precise and better made. Since everything is built indoors, there’s less chance of damage from rain or wind. The result is a strong, well-built home or building.

These buildings are also better for the environment. Since they use materials more efficiently and produce less waste, modular buildings help reduce pollution and save resources. They also cause less noise and mess at the building site, which is great for nearby neighbors.

Modular construction is being used for all kinds of buildings—houses, apartments, offices, and even schools. Cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco are using it to build affordable housing faster, especially to help with the housing crisis and homelessness.

In short, modular and prefabricated buildings are changing the way California builds. They are fast, high-quality, and better for the planet—a smart solution for a growing state.

Health Alert: Listeria Outbreak in California Communities

California health officials have reported a troubling Listeria outbreak throughout the state recently

In April of this year, state health inspectors found Listeria bacteria (also called Listeria monocytogenes) during a routine inspection at Fresh & Ready Foods LLC in San Fernando. This finding has raised concern since this firm makes most of the ready-to-eat foods that fill our grocery store shelves and our refrigerator shelves.

Public health officials identify frozen foods as a special concern during this outbreak. Listeria, according to health officials, is an oddity among foodborne pathogens in that it can remain viable and even multiply in the temperature range of refrigerators. Frozen fruits, vegetables, and pre-cooked meals may then contain this bacterium even when stored in your house.

The California Department of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are closely observing the situation. While we at TCE Constructors are experts at constructing safe buildings, we also believe in communicating information that makes communities safer. With that being said, we’re sharing these health authority-recommended suggestions with you:

What Health Experts Are Recommending: Specific Safety Steps You Can Take:

  • Avoid Recalled Products
Do not consume any recalled ready-to-eat or frozen foods. Discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase.
  • Clean and Sanitize
Thoroughly disinfect kitchen surfaces, utensils, and refrigerator drawers—Listeria can survive in cold conditions and spread easily.
  • Keep Foods Cold
Maintain your refrigerator at 5°C (41°F) or below. Refrigerate foods promptly after purchase, and consume ready-to-eat items within four hours of removing them from the fridge.
  • Practice Proper Food Handling
Wash hands with warm, soapy water before and after handling food. Scrub raw vegetables thoroughly. Never rinse raw meat or poultry, as this can spread bacteria. Always cook food to safe internal temperatures.
  • Avoid High-Risk Foods
Steer clear of raw milk and soft cheeses unless labeled as made from pasteurized milk. Be extra cautious with sprouts, leafy greens, and melons.
  • Watch for Symptoms
If you experience fever, fatigue, muscle aches, stiff neck, confusion, or balance issues—especially after eating high-risk foods—seek medical help right away.

At TCE Constructors, we care about more than construction—we care about community. Help us spread the word, stay alert, and protect your loved ones.

Let’s build a safer, healthier California together.
